Life Cycle of a Butterfly (or Housefly)

Insects like butterflies and houseflies go through a complete metamorphosis, which means they have four distinct stages:

  1. Egg: The life cycle begins when an adult butterfly lays tiny eggs, usually on a leaf.
  2. Larva (Caterpillar): The egg hatches into a larva, which is a caterpillar for a butterfly. The larva eats a lot and grows quickly, shedding its skin several times.
  3. Pupa (Chrysalis): The larva then changes into a pupa. For a butterfly, this stage is called a chrysalis. During this stage, the insect is inactive but undergoes major changes inside.
  4. Adult: Finally, the pupa transforms into an adult butterfly, which emerges, flies, mates, and lays eggs to start the cycle again.

Life Cycle of a Frog

Frogs go through a process called metamorphosis, changing from an aquatic form to a terrestrial adult. Their life cycle typically has these stages:

  1. Eggs: Adult female frogs lay eggs in water, often in a jelly-like cluster called frogspawn.
  2. Tadpole: The eggs hatch into tadpoles, which are aquatic larvae with gills for breathing underwater and a tail for swimming. Tadpoles feed on algae.
  3. Tadpole with Legs: As the tadpole grows, it develops hind legs, then front legs. Its tail starts to shrink, and lungs begin to develop for breathing air.
  4. Froglet: The tadpole loses its tail completely and becomes a froglet, which can live both in water and on land.
  5. Adult Frog: The froglet grows into an adult frog, which lives mostly on land but returns to water to lay eggs and repeat the cycle.
