Instructional Materials

To deliver this lesson, the teacher will use the following materials: tuning fork, ruler, string instruments (rubber bands over a box), metal spoons, empty bottles of different sizes, charts showing sound waves, video clips on sound production, small drums or containers with stretched membranes, bell or musical triangle, magnets of different sizes, paper clips, nails, iron filings, compass, chart showing magnetic fields.

Forms of Energy

Energy exists in different forms and is needed to perform work or cause change. In this lesson, we will learn about two forms: sound energy and magnetic energy.

Sound Energy

Sound energy is a type of energy made by vibrations.When something vibrates, it sends sound waves through the air or another medium to our ears.

Sources of Sound Energy

These include objects and activities that produce noise through vibration. The following are:

  1. Drums
  2. Bells
  3. Clapping hands
  4. Talking or singing
  5. Musical instruments
  6. Car horns
  7. Footsteps

How Sound Travels

Sound travels in waves and needs a medium like solid, liquid, or gas. It cannot travel through a vacuum. It moves faster through solids and slowest through gases.

Properties of Sound

Sound has properties such as pitch and volume.Pitch is how high or low a sound is. Volume is how loud or soft it is indeed.

Magnetic Energy

Magnetic energy is the force produced by magnets. It can pull or push certain materials like iron and steel.

How Magnets Work

Magnets attract and repel objects depending on their poles. The following are:

  1. Like poles repel each other
  2. Unlike poles attract each other
  3. Magnets attract iron objects
  4. Magnetic force passes through some materials
  5. Magnets have a north and south pole
  6. The strength of a magnet varies
