Data refers to any collection of facts, numbers, text, or symbols that are used to describe something. In the world of computers and technology, data is the raw information that is processed to create useful knowledge. Data can be collected, stored, and analyzed in various forms.
Types of Data
There are different types of data, which are categorized based on thier format and use.
The following are:
- Alphabetic Data: This consists of letters and words, such as names, places, and other textual information. Examples include student names like “Aisha Musa,” city names like “Kano,” and subjects like “Mathematics.”
- Numeric Data: Numeric data includes numbers, which can be used for counting, calculations, or measurements. Examples include age (10 years), height (1.5 meters), and test scores (85%).
- Alphanumeric Data: This data is a combination of both letters and numbers, for example, alphanumeric passwords like “A1B2C3.” Other examples include registration numbers like “NAS/001/2024” and product codes like “XYZ123.”
- Symbolic Data: This data includes symbols like $, %, or #, which represent different meanings or functions in various contexts. Examples include currency symbols ($ for dollars, ₦ for Naira), percentage signs (50%), and hashtags (#) used on social media.
