Data Processing – Computer As An Information Processing Machine
A computer is a machine that helps us process data into useful information. It does this using the IPO model which stands for Input, Process, and Output.
Processing
Processing is the stage where the computer works on the data to turn it into information. The following are components involved in processing:
- Central Processing Unit
- Arithmetic Logic Unit
- Control Unit
- Memory Unit
IPO helps us understand how computers work and how we get results from them.
The Data-Processing Cycle
Data are raw facts, while information is data that have been organised or interpreted to become useful. A computer receives data as input, processes it according to instructions, produces information as output and may store the result.
For example, a teacher enters pupils’ scores, the computer calculates totals or averages, and a report displays the results. Wrong or incomplete input can produce wrong output, so data should be checked. The computer processes information quickly but still depends on correct instructions from people.
