Rationale for the Lesson

Understanding shapes is basic to spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills.This lesson provides a foundation for future learning in mathematics and other subjects,helping pupils to better understand and interact with the world around them.


Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

The teacher will start by asking pupils what shapes they see around them in the classroom.The teacher will then show pictures of different shapes, encouraging pupils to name them. This will help to activate prior knowledge and generate interest in the topic.

What are 2D Shapes?

2D shapes are flat shapes with two dimensions: length and width. They are like drawings on paper.

Examples are:

  1. Circle: A round shape with equal distance from its centre to any point on its edge. Think of a coin or a pizza!
  2. Square: A shape with four equal sides and four right angles. Imagine a box of chocolates or a window pane.
  3. Triangle: A shape with three sides and three angles. Look at a slice of pizza or a traffic sign.
  4. Rectangle: A shape with four sides,where opposite sides are equal and four right angles. Think of a door or a book.
  5. Pentagon: A shape with five sides and five angles. The Pentagon building in the United States is shaped like this!
  6. Hexagon: A shape with six sides and six angles. Look at a honeycomb or a stop sign.
  7. Octagon: A shape with eight sides and eight angles. Think of a stop sign or a spider web.
  8. Parallelogram: A shape with four sides where opposite sides are parallel and equal in length. Imagine a leaning tower or a kite.

What are 3D Shapes?

3D shapes are solid shapes with three dimensions: length, width, and height. They are like real objects you can hold.

These include:

  1. Cube: A solid shape with six equal square faces. Think of a dice or a sugar cube.
  2. Sphere: A solid shape like a ball,with a curved surface.Imagine a basketball or a globe.
  3. Cylinder: A solid shape with two circular bases connected by a curved surface. Think of a can of soup or a toilet paper roll.
  4. cone: A solid shape with a circular base and a single curved surface that tapers to a point.Think of an ice cream cone or a party hat.
  5. rectangular prism (or Box): A solid shape with six rectangular faces. Imagine a shoebox or a brick.
  6. Pyramid: A solid shape with a polygonal base and triangular faces meeting at a point. Think of the pyramids of Egypt or a tent.
  7. Triangular prism: A solid shape with two triangular faces and three rectangular faces.Imagine a Toblerone chocolate bar or a tent.
  8. Hemisphere: Half of a sphere, like the top half of a ball. Think of a dome or an igloo.
