Lesson Content/Board Summary
Hajj (Pilgrimage)
Meaning of Hajj
Hajj is the annual pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah in Saudi Arabia. It is one of the five pillars of Islam and is compulsory for every Muslim who is physically and financially able to undertake the journey at least once in their lifetime.
Hajj is performed during the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah.
Types of Hajj
There are three main types of Hajj that a pilgrim can perform:
- Hajj al-Ifrad (Single Hajj): This type of Hajj involves performing only the Hajj rituals without combining them with Umrah. The pilgrim makes the intention for Hajj only.
- Hajj al-Qiran (Combined Hajj): In this type, the pilgrim performs both Hajj and Umrah together with a single intention and a single set of rituals. The pilgrim remains in the state of Ihram for both.
- Hajj at-Tamattu’ (Enjoyable Hajj): This is the most common and recommended type of Hajj. The pilgrim performs Umrah first, then exits the state of Ihram, and then re-enters Ihram for Hajj during the Hajj days.
