Lesson Content/Board Summary

Recommendable Aspects of Al-Wudu (Sunan Al-Wudu)

Definition of Sunan Al-Wudu

Sunan Al-Wudu refers to the recommendable acts in Wudu that are not obligatory (Fard) but were practiced by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Performing these acts adds to the reward of Wudu, but omitting them does not invalidate the Wudu.

Examples of Recommendable Aspects of Al-Wudu

The following are some recommendable acts in Al-Wudu:

  • Saying Bismillah: Reciting “Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem” (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful) at the beginning of Wudu.
  • Washing the hands: Washing the hands up to the wrists three times at the very beginning of Wudu.
  • Rinsing the mouth (Madmadah): Swirling water in the mouth and spitting it out three times.
  • Sniffing water into the nose (Istinshaq): Drawing water into the nostrils three times.
  • Expelling water from the nose (Istinthar): Blowing water out of the nose three times after Istinshaq.
  • Wiping the entire head: Wiping the head from front to back and then back to front (once).
  • Wiping the ears: Wiping the inside and outside of the ears with wet fingers (once).
  • Passing fingers through beard: For men, passing wet fingers through a thick beard.
  • Passing fingers between toes: Ensuring water reaches between the toes.
  • Repeating washes three times: Washing each obligatory limb three times (except for wiping the head and ears, which is usually once).
  • Starting with the right side: Washing the right hand and foot before the left.
  • Rubbing (Dalk): Rubbing the limbs while washing them to ensure water covers all parts.
  • Reciting supplication after Wudu: Saying “Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh” (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger) after completing Wudu.
