Rationale for the Lesson

About Surah al-Takathur

Surah al-Takathur is the 102nd chapter of the Qur’an. It has 8 verses. The Surah warns against being preoccupied with worldly gains and possessions, reminding us of the ultimate reality of the Hereafter.

Text of Surah al-Takathur

The verses of Surah al-Takathur are:

1. أَلْهَاكُمُ ٱلتَّكَاثُرُ
   Alhakumut-takathur
   The mutual rivalry (for piling up of worldly things) diverts you.
2. حَتَّىٰ زُرْتُمُ ٱلْمَقَابِرَ
   Hatta zurtumul-maqabir
   Until you visit the graves (i.e., till you die).
3. كَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ
   Kalla sawfa ta’lamun
   Nay! You shall come to know!
4. ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ
   Thumma kalla sawfa ta’lamun
   Again, nay! You shall come to know!
5. كَلَّا لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عِلْمَ ٱلْيَقِينِ
   Kalla law ta’lamuna ‘ilmal-yaqin
   Nay! If you had but sure knowledge (you would not have occupied yourselves in the worldly things)!
6. لَتَرَوُنَّ ٱلْجَحِيمَ
   Latarawunnal-jahim
   You shall certainly see the blazing Fire (Hell)!
7. ثُمَّ لَتَرَوُنَّهَا عَيْنَ ٱلْيَقِينِ
   Thumma latarawunnaha ‘aynal-yaqin
   Again, you shall certainly see it with the eye of certainty.
8. ثُمَّ لَتُسْأَلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
   Thumma latus’alunna yawma’idhin ‘anin-na’im
   Then, on that Day, you shall be asked about the delights (you indulged in, in this world)!
