Lesson Content/Board Summary
The Sunnah Aspect of Al-Wudu
Meaning of Sunnah
Sunnah refers to the practices, sayings, and approvals of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Following the Sunnah in our worship, like Wudu, brings extra rewards and pleases Allah.
Sunnah Acts of Al-Wudu
These are acts that are recommended to perform during Wudu to gain more rewards, but Wudu is still valid without them. The following are some Sunnah acts of Al-Wudu:
- Saying Bismillah: Starting Wudu by saying “Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem” (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful).
- Washing hands up to wrists: Washing both hands up to the wrists three times at the beginning of Wudu, before putting them into the water container.
- Rinsing the mouth (Madmadah): Rinsing the mouth with water three times.
- Sniffing water into the nose (Istinshaq): Sniffing water into the nose three times and then expelling it (Istinthar).
- Wiping the ears: Wiping the inside and outside of both ears with wet fingers.
- Passing fingers through the beard: If one has a thick beard, passing wet fingers through it.
- Passing fingers between the toes: Making sure water reaches between the toes by passing fingers through them.
- Repeating each wash three times: Washing each limb three times instead of just once.
- Starting with the right side: Washing the right hand, foot, etc., before the left.
- Making Du’a after Wudu: Reciting the specific supplication after completing Wudu, such as “Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa Rasuluh” (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger).
