Lesson Content/Board Summary
Meaning and Lessons from Suratul Fil
Suratul Fil: Meaning
Suratul Fil is the 105th chapter of the Holy Quran. “Al-Fil” means “The Elephant” in Arabic. This Surah tells the story of how Allah protected His sacred House, the Ka’aba, from destruction.
The Story of Suratul Fil
Many years ago, Abraha, the ruler of Yemen, was jealous of the Ka’aba in Makkah because many people went there for pilgrimage. He built a grand church in his own land and wanted people to visit it instead. When people did not come, he became angry and decided to destroy the Ka’aba. Abraha gathered a large army, which included a powerful elephant named Mahmud.
As Abraha’s army approached Makkah, the elephant refused to move towards the Ka’aba. No matter how much they tried, the elephant would not advance. Then, Allah sent flocks of birds called Ababil. Each bird carried small stones in its beak and claws. The birds dropped these stones on Abraha’s army, destroying them completely. Allah protected His House from the invaders.

- The Ka’aba is a sacred place that Allah Himself protects.
