Understanding safety precautions helps pupils develop good habits for physical well-being. It also promotes a sense of responsibility and awareness of their surroundings when engaging in movement.
Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge
Pupils have learned about different body movements and can identify various body parts. They also have basic knowledge of simple rules in the classroom and during play.
Lesson Content/Board Summary
Moving Our Body Parts 2: Safety Precautions
Safety Precautions During Body Movements
To move our bodies safely and avoid getting hurt, we must follow some rules. These rules help us enjoy physical activities without danger.
1. Use a Safe Space for Movement
Always make sure there is enough clear space around you when you want to move. Avoid crowded areas where you might bump into others or objects.
2. Wear Suitable Clothing and Footwear
Wear clothes that are comfortable and allow you to move freely. Your shoes should fit well, be tied properly, and have good grip to prevent slipping.
3. Warm Up Gently Before Moving
Before doing big or fast movements, do small, gentle exercises like stretching. This helps to prepare your muscles and prevent injuries.
4. Avoid Pushing, Collisions, and Dangerous Surfaces
Do not push your friends or run into them. Look around carefully to avoid bumping into people or things. Also, do not play or move on wet, slippery, or uneven ground, as these can cause you to fall.
5. Stop When You Feel Pain or See Danger
If you feel any pain in your body while moving, stop immediately and tell your teacher. Also, stop if you notice any danger around you, like a broken object or a slippery spot.
Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques
Discussion, Demonstration, Guided Practice, Question and Answer, Explanation, Observation, Practical Activity
Instructional Procedures
Step 1: Introduction
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Storytelling/Questioning
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils and tells a short story about a child who got hurt while playing because they did not follow safety rules. The teacher then asks, “Why is it important to be careful when we move our bodies?”
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen to the story and share their ideas on why safety is important.
Learning Point: Importance of safety
Step 2: Safe Space for Movement
Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration/Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains the importance of a safe space. The teacher uses cones to mark a safe activity area and demonstrates how to move within it without touching others. The teacher then asks pupils to identify safe and unsafe spaces from pictures.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe the demonstration, identify safe and unsafe spaces, and practice moving within the marked safe area.
Learning Point: Safe movement space
Step 3: Suitable Clothing and Footwear
Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Discussion/Observation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher discusses the importance of wearing appropriate sportswear and footwear. The teacher shows examples of suitable and unsuitable clothing/shoes for physical activity and asks pupils to check their own attire.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils discuss suitable clothing and footwear, check their own, and explain why certain items are safe or unsafe.
Learning Point: Appropriate attire
Step 4: Gentle Warm-Up
Time: 6 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration/Guided Practice
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains that warming up prepares the body for movement. The teacher leads pupils in a few simple, gentle warm-up exercises like arm circles and leg stretches.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils follow the teacher’s lead and participate in the gentle warm-up exercises.
Learning Point: Gentle warm-up
Step 5: Avoiding Pushing and Collisions
Time: 6 minutes
Teaching Skill: Discussion/Role-play
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher discusses the dangers of pushing and bumping into others. The teacher demonstrates how to move carefully, looking around, and avoiding contact. Pupils then practice moving in a group while being mindful of others’ space.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils discuss how to avoid pushing, observe the demonstration, and practice moving carefully in the designated area.
Learning Point: Avoiding collisions
Step 6: Dangerous Surfaces and Stopping for Safety
Time: 4 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Question and Answer
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains why it is dangerous to move on wet, slippery, or uneven surfaces. The teacher also emphasizes the importance of stopping immediately if they feel pain or see any danger. The teacher asks pupils what they should do if they feel pain.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen, answer questions, and understand when to stop moving for their safety.
Learning Point: Stopping for safety
Step 7: Evaluation/Review
Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:
- Mention two safety precautions you should take before moving your body.
- Why is it important to wear suitable shoes when playing?
- What should you do if you feel pain while moving?
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and in writing.
Learning Point: Safety precautions identified
Step 8: Note-Taking
Time: 4 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guided Writing
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher guides pupils to copy the essential Board Summary notes on safety precautions during body movements into their notebooks.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils copy the notes carefully into their notebooks.
Learning Point: Safety notes copied
Step 9: Conclusion
Time: 1 minute
Teaching Skill: Reinforcement
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher reminds pupils that safety is always first in all physical activities and encourages them to always remember and apply the safety rules they have learned.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils acknowledge the importance of safety.
Learning Point: Safety in movement
Continuous Assessment/Further Study
Type: Homework
Instruction: Draw two pictures in your notebook:
- One picture showing a child moving safely.
- One picture showing a child moving unsafely.
Lesson Keywords
- Safety – Being protected from danger or harm.
- Precautions – Actions taken to prevent something bad from happening.
- Movement – Changing position or place.
- Warm-up – Gentle exercises done before physical activity.
- Collision – When two or more things hit each other.
Differentiation
For weaker learners: Provide simplified pictures of safe/unsafe actions and guide them with direct questions. Allow them to demonstrate simple safe movements.
For faster learners: Challenge them to explain why each precaution is important and ask them to suggest other simple safety rules for different activities.

Teacher Guide for Using This Lesson Plan
Before the lesson, ensure the activity space is clear and safe, free from any obstacles. Have pictures ready to illustrate safe and unsafe movement scenarios. During the lesson, emphasize practical demonstrations and allow pupils ample opportunity to practice safe movements under your supervision. Pay close attention to pupils’ understanding of each safety precaution and correct any misconceptions immediately. Encourage pupils to always think about safety before engaging in any physical activity. Guide them to copy the Board Summary notes after the main teaching points have been covered and understood. For pupils who struggle, provide individual attention and simpler tasks. For those who grasp concepts quickly, encourage them to elaborate on the importance of safety rules.
