Characteristics of Living Things

Living things are organisms that exhibit certain properties that distinguish them from non-living things. These properties are essential for survival and continuity of life.

The following are common characteristics of living things:

  • Respiration: Process of releasing energy from food substances.
  • Nutrition: Process of obtaining and utilising food.
  • Irritability (Sensitivity): Ability to detect and respond to changes in the environment.
  • Growth: Permanent increase in size and dry mass.
  • Excretion: Removal of metabolic waste products from the body.
  • Reproduction: Process by which living things produce new individuals of their own kind.
  • Adaptation: Ability to adjust to changes in the environment over time.

Differences Between Plants and Animals

While both are living things, plants and animals have distinct differences:

  • Nutrition: Plants are autotrophic (make their own food through photosynthesis); animals are heterotrophic (obtain food from other organisms).
  • Movement: Most plants are stationary; most animals show locomotion (move from place to place).
  • Cell Wall: Plant cells have a cell wall; animal cells do not.

  • Biosphere: The part of Earth where life exists, including land, water, and air.
    • Example: All ecosystems on Earth.
