Definitions of Key Ecological Terms

  • Environment: The surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates.
  • Population: A group of individuals of the same species living in the same area at the same time.
  • Biosphere: The part of the Earth’s surface and atmosphere inhabited by living organisms.
  • Lithosphere: The rigid outer part of the Earth, consisting of the crust and upper mantle.
  • Hydrosphere: All the water on the Earth’s surface, such as lakes and seas, and sometimes including water over the Earth’s surface, such as clouds.
  • Atmosphere: The envelope of gases surrounding the Earth or another planet.
  • Niche: The specific role or position an organism occupies within its ecosystem, including its interactions with other organisms and its use of resources.
  • Habitat: The natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other organism.
  • Community: All the different populations of organisms living and interacting in a particular area.
  • Ecosystem: A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.

Nigeria’s Ecological Regions

Nigeria exhibits diverse ecological regions due to variations in climate and vegetation:

  • Sahel: The semi-arid region in the extreme north, characterized by sparse vegetation.
  • Sudan Savanna: A dry grassland region south of the Sahel, with scattered trees.
  • Guinea Savanna: A wetter grassland region with taller grasses and more trees, covering a large part of central Nigeria.
  • Tropical Forest: Dense forests found in the southern parts of Nigeria, characterized by high rainfall and biodiversity.
  • Swamp Forest: Found in the coastal areas and Niger Delta, these are waterlogged forests.

Major World Biomes

Biomes are large ecological areas on the Earth’s surface, with flora and fauna adapting to their environment:

  • Tropical Forest: Characterized by high rainfall and temperature, supporting rich biodiversity (e.g., Amazon Rainforest).
  • Savanna: Grasslands with scattered trees, found in tropical and subtropical regions, experiencing distinct wet and dry seasons (e.g., African Savanna).
