  • Neck: The constricted region where the crown meets the root, covered by the gum.

The dental formula is a shorthand method of expressing the number and arrangement of each type of tooth in one half of the upper and lower jaws. It is written as a fraction:

I (Incisors), C (Canines), P (Premolars), M (Molars)

For example, the human permanent dental formula is:

I 2/2, C 1/1, P 2/2, M 3/3 = 32 teeth (total)

Adaptations of Teeth to Feeding Habits

The dentition of mammals is highly adapted to their specific diets:

  • Herbivores (Plant-eaters):
    • Large, flat molars and premolars for grinding tough plant material.
