Meaning of Key Ecological Concepts
Ecology is the scientific study of the interactions between living organisms and their environment, including both biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) components.
The environment refers to all the external conditions and factors, both living and non-living, that affect an organism or a community of organisms.
The biosphere is the part of Earth where life exists, encompassing the land, water, and atmosphere. It is the sum of all ecosystems.
The lithosphere is the rigid, outermost shell of a rocky planet, including the crust and the uppermost mantle. It represents the land component of the environment.
The atmosphere is the layer of gases surrounding Earth, held in place by gravity. It provides essential gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide and protects life from harmful radiation.
A habitat is the natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other organism. It provides the necessary resources for survival, such as food, water, and shelter.
A niche describes the specific role or position an organism occupies within its ecosystem, including its interactions with other species and its use of resources. It is an organism’s “profession” or “way of life” in the ecosystem.
A population is a group of individuals of the same species living in the same geographical area at the same time.
A biotic community (or biological community) consists of all the different populations of various species living and interacting in a particular area.
An ecosystem is a community of living organisms (biotic components) interacting with their non-living physical environment (abiotic components) as a functional unit.
Basic Components of an Ecosystem
Ecosystems are composed of two main types of components:
- Biotic Components: These are the living or once-living parts of an ecosystem. They include:
- Producers (Autotrophs): Organisms that produce their own food, mainly through photosynthesis (e.g., plants, algae).
- Consumers (Heterotrophs): Organisms that obtain energy by feeding on other organisms. They can be:
- Primary Consumers (Herbivores): Feed on producers (e.g., goats, rabbits).
- Secondary Consumers (Carnivores/Omnivores): Feed on primary consumers (e.g., snakes, humans).
- Tertiary Consumers (Top Carnivores): Feed on secondary consumers (e.g., eagles, lions).
- Decomposers: Organisms that break down dead organic matter, recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem (e.g., bacteria, fungi).
- Abiotic Components: These are the non-living physical and chemical factors that influence living organisms and the functioning of the ecosystem. They include:
- Sunlight

- Temperature
- Soil
- Air (gases like oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen)
- pH (acidity/alkalinity)
- Minerals and nutrients
Distinction Between Population and Biotic Community
The main differences between a population and a biotic community are:
- Definition:
- A population refers to a group of individuals of the same species living in a specific area.
- A biotic community refers to all the different populations of various species that live and interact in a specific area.
- Composition:
- A population is monospecific (composed of one species).
- A biotic community is multispecific (composed of many different species).
- Interactions:
- Within a population, interactions are primarily intraspecific (e.g., competition for mates, resources among individuals of the same species).
- Within a biotic community, interactions are both intraspecific and interspecific (e.g., predation, competition, symbiosis between different species).
- Scope:
- A population is a smaller, more specific ecological unit.
- A biotic community is a broader ecological unit, comprising multiple populations.
- Example:
- All the Tilapia fish in a particular pond form a population.
- All the Tilapia fish, water lilies, frogs, insects, and bacteria in that same pond form a biotic community.
