- Test for Reducing Sugars (e.g., Glucose): Add Benedict’s solution to the food sample and heat gently. A colour change from blue through green, yellow, orange to brick-red precipitate indicates the presence of reducing sugar.
- Test for Proteins: Biuret test involves adding sodium hydroxide solution and then copper sulphate solution to the food sample. A violet or purple colour indicates the presence of protein.
- Test for Fats and Oils: Rub the food sample on a piece of white paper. A translucent stain that does not dry up indicates the presence of fat or oil (emulsion test with ethanol gives a milky emulsion).
Types of Heterotrophic Nutrition
Heterotrophic nutrition is a mode of nutrition where organisms obtain food by consuming other organisms or organic matter.
The following are types of heterotrophic nutrition:
- Holozoic Nutrition: Involves the ingestion of solid or liquid organic food material, followed by digestion, absorption, assimilation, and egestion. Examples include humans, dogs, birds.
- Saprophytic Nutrition: Involves organisms feeding on dead or decaying organic matter. They secrete digestive enzymes externally and absorb the digested nutrients. Examples include fungi and most bacteria.
