Definition of Feeding

Feeding is the process by which living organisms obtain and process food substances necessary for their growth, energy, and maintenance. It is one of the essential life processes.

Types of Nutrition

Living organisms exhibit two main types of nutrition:

  • Autotrophic Nutrition
  • Heterotrophic Nutrition

Autotrophic Nutrition

Autotrophic nutrition is a type of nutrition where organisms produce their own food from simple inorganic substances. These organisms are called autotrophs or producers.

There are two main forms of autotrophic nutrition:

  • Photosynthetic Nutrition: This involves using light energy to synthesize organic food from carbon dioxide and water. Organisms that carry out photosynthesis include green plants, algae, and some bacteria (e.g., cyanobacteria).
  • Chemosynthetic Nutrition: This involves using chemical energy obtained from the oxidation of inorganic substances (e.g., ammonia, hydrogen sulphide) to synthesize organic food. Organisms that carry out chemosynthesis are mainly certain bacteria (e.g., nitrifying bacteria, sulphur bacteria).

Heterotrophic Nutrition

Heterotrophic nutrition is a type of nutrition where organisms obtain ready-made organic food from other organisms, either living or dead. These organisms are called heterotrophs or consumers.

Modes of Heterotrophic Nutrition

The following are the common modes of heterotrophic nutrition:

  • Holozoic Nutrition: Involves ingesting solid or liquid organic food, digesting it internally, absorbing the nutrients, and egesting undigested waste. Examples include humans, animals, and amoeba. Holozoic nutrition can be further classified based on diet:
    • Herbivorous: Feed on plants (e.g., goats, cows).
    • Carnivorous: Feed on other animals (e.g., lions, eagles).
    • Omnivorous: Feed on both plants and animals (e.g., humans, bears).
    • Detritivorous: Feed on decaying organic matter (e.g., earthworms, vultures).
  • Saprophytic Nutrition: Involves obtaining nutrients from dead and decaying organic matter by secreting digestive enzymes externally, then absorbing the digested soluble products. Examples include fungi (e.g., mushrooms) and some bacteria.
  • Parasitic Nutrition: Involves obtaining nutrients from another living organism (the host), causing harm to the host in the process. The parasite lives on or inside the host. Examples include tapeworms, lice, mosquitoes, and some bacteria and fungi.
