Characteristics of Living Things

Living things are organisms that possess certain unique features or processes that distinguish them from non-living things. These characteristics are essential for survival and continuity of life. A common mnemonic to remember these characteristics is MR NIGER-D:

  1. Movement: The ability of an organism to change its position or the position of its body parts. Animals exhibit locomotion (movement from one place to another), while plants show growth movements (e.g., bending towards light, opening and closing of flowers).
  2. Respiration: The process by which living organisms break down food substances to release energy for various life activities. This can be aerobic (with oxygen) or anaerobic (without oxygen).
  3. Nutrition: The process by which organisms obtain and utilise food for energy, growth, and repair. Plants are autotrophic (make their own food through photosynthesis), while animals are heterotrophic (obtain food from other organisms).
  4. Irritability (Sensitivity): The ability of an organism to detect and respond to changes in its internal or external environment. These changes are called stimuli (e.g., light, temperature, touch, chemicals).
  5. Growth: An irreversible increase in the size, mass, and complexity of an organism. This involves an increase in the number and size of cells.
  6. Excretion: The process of removing metabolic waste products (e.g., carbon dioxide, urea, excess water) from the body. These waste products can be toxic if allowed to accumulate.
  7. Reproduction: The process by which living organisms produce new individuals of their own kind, ensuring the continuity of the species. This can be asexual (one parent) or sexual (two parents).
  8. Death: The cessation of all life functions. While not a process like the others, it is an inevitable part of the life cycle of all living organisms.

Differences Between Animals and Plants

While both plants and animals are living organisms and share the general characteristics mentioned above, they exhibit significant differences in their structure, nutrition, and movement patterns. These differences are summarised in the table below:

Response to Stimuli Rapid and often complex responses, involving nervous and endocrine systems. Slower and less complex responses, often involving hormones.
Reserve Food Glycogen and fat. Starch and oil.
Vacuoles Small and scattered, or absent. Large, central vacuole in mature cells, maintaining turgor.
