What is a Calendar?
A calendar is a chart or series of pages showing the days, weeks, and months of a particular year, or giving particular seasonal information.
Parts of a Calendar
The following are the main parts of a calendar:
- Year: The specific year the calendar represents (e.g., 2024).
- Months: The twelve divisions of a year (January to December).
- Weeks: Each month is divided into weeks. A week has seven days.
- Days: The seven days of the week (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday).
- Dates: The numbers representing each day of the month.
Constructing a Calendar Month by Month
To construct a calendar, you need to know the following:
- The first day of the month.
- The total number of days in that month.
Constructing January Calendar
January always has 31 days. To construct the January calendar for the following year, first identify what day the 1st of January falls on. Then, fill in the dates sequentially until the 31st.
Example: If January 1st, 2025 is a Wednesday, the calendar would start with 1 under Wednesday, then 2 under Thursday, and so on.
Constructing February Calendar from January
February has 28 days in a common year and 29 days in a leap year. A leap year occurs every four years when the year number is divisible by 4 (e.g., 2024, 2028). To construct the February calendar, determine the day January 31st fell on. Count the number of days remaining in January after the last full week. Then, the 1st of February will be that many days after January 1st’s day.
Rule: If January has 31 days, and January 1st was a Wednesday, then February 1st will be 3 days after Wednesday (Wednesday + 3 days = Saturday). This is because 31 days = 4 weeks and 3 days (31 ÷ 7 = 4 remainder 3).
Constructing March Calendar from February
March always has 31 days. To construct the March calendar, follow the same method as constructing February from January. Determine the day February 28th (or 29th) fell on, then count forward to find the day for March 1st.
Rule: If February has 28 days, and February 1st was a Saturday, then March 1st will be 0 days after Saturday (Saturday). This is because 28 days = 4 weeks and 0 days (28 ÷ 7 = 4 remainder 0).
Rule: If February has 29 days (leap year), and February 1st was a Saturday, then March 1st will be 1 day after Saturday (Sunday). This is because 29 days = 4 weeks and 1 day (29 ÷ 7 = 4 remainder 1).
Constructing April Calendar from March
April always has 30 days. To construct the April calendar, determine the day March 31st fell on, then count forward to find the day for April 1st.
Rule: If March has 31 days, and March 1st was a Sunday, then April 1st will be 3 days after Sunday (Wednesday). This is because 31 days = 4 weeks and 3 days (31 ÷ 7 = 4 remainder 3).
