LENGTH

Units of Length

Length is the measurement or extent of something from end to end. It tells us how long an object is or the distance between two points.

The following are standard units of length:

  • Centimetre (cm): Used for measuring small lengths, like the length of a pencil or a book.
  • Metre (m): Used for measuring medium lengths, like the height of a door or the length of a classroom.
  • Kilometre (km): Used for measuring long distances, like the distance between two towns or cities.

Conversions of Units of Length

Units of length can be converted from one to another:

  • 1 metre (m) = 100 centimetres (cm)
  • 1 kilometre (km) = 1000 metres (m)

Examples:

  • To convert 2 metres to centimetres: 2 m = 2 x 100 cm = 200 cm.
  • To convert 3 kilometres to metres: 3 km = 3 x 1000 m = 3000 m.

Estimation of Length and Breadth

Estimation is making a careful guess about the measurement of something without using a measuring tool. It helps us to have an idea of size before actual measurement.

To estimate length:

  • Look at the object.
  • Compare it to something whose length you already know (e.g., a ruler, your hand span).
  • Make an educated guess.

Estimating Distances

Estimating distances involves guessing how far apart two places are. This can be done by visual comparison or by walking the distance and counting steps.

Comparing Estimated and Actual Length

After estimating, it is important to measure the object or distance accurately using a ruler or measuring tape. Then, compare the estimated value with the actual measured value to see how close the guess was.

The difference between the estimated and actual length shows how accurate the estimation was.

Quantitative Reasoning on Length Estimation and Measurement

Quantitative reasoning involves using numbers and mathematical ideas to solve problems. For length, this includes comparing, ordering, and solving word problems based on estimated and actual measurements.

Example: If a table is estimated to be 1.5 metres long and actually measures 1.7 metres, find the difference between the estimated and actual length.

  • Difference = Actual length – Estimated length
  • Difference = 1.7 m – 1.5 m = 0.2 m
