Meaning of Least Common Multiple (LCM)

The Least Common Multiple (LCM) of two or more numbers is the smallest non-zero number that is a multiple of all the given numbers. To find the LCM, we list the multiples of each number until we find the first common multiple.

Example of Multiples

Multiples of 6: (6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, dots)
Multiples of 8: (8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, dots)

Meaning of Highest Common Factor (HCF)

The Highest Common Factor (HCF) of two or more numbers is the largest number that divides exactly into all the given numbers without leaving a remainder. To find the HCF, we list the factors of each number and find the largest factor common to all of them.

Example of Factors

Factors of 12: (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12)
Factors of 18: (1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18)

Meaning of a Prime Number

A prime number is a whole number greater than 1 that has only two factors: 1 and itself. This means it can only be divided exactly by 1 and itself.

Examples of Prime Numbers

Some prime numbers include:

  1. 2 (factors: 1, 2)
  2. 3 (factors: 1, 3)
  3. 5 (factors: 1, 5)
  4. 7 (factors: 1, 7)
  5. 11 (factors: 1, 11)
  6. 13 (factors: 1, 13)

Note: The number 1 is not a prime number because it only has one factor (itself).

Finding LCM of Two 2-Digit Numbers

To find the LCM of two numbers, list their multiples until a common multiple is found.

Example 1: Find the LCM of 12 and 16.

Solution:

Step 1: List the multiples of 12.

(12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, dots)

Step 2: List the multiples of 16.

(16, 32, 48, 64, 80, dots)

Step 3: Identify the smallest common multiple.

The smallest number appearing in both lists is 48.

Answer: The LCM of 12 and 16 is (48).

Finding HCF of Two 2-Digit Numbers

To find the HCF of two numbers, list their factors and identify the largest common factor.

Example 1: Find the HCF of 24 and 36.

Solution:

Step 1: List the factors of 24.

(1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24)

Step 2: List the factors of 36.

(1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, 36)

Step 3: Identify the largest common factor.

The largest number appearing in both lists is 12.

Answer: The HCF of 24 and 36 is (12).

Question: Two bells ring at intervals of 10 minutes and 15 minutes respectively. If they both ring together at 9:00 AM, when will they next ring together?

Solution:

Step 2: Find the multiples of 10.

Step 3: Find the multiples of 15.

Step 4: Identify the LCM.

The LCM of 10 and 15 is 30.

Step 5: Add the LCM to the starting time.

30 minutes after 9:00 AM is 9:30 AM.
