What is Area?

Area is the amount of space inside a two-dimensional shape. It’s measured in square units,like square centimeters (cm²),square meters (m²),and square kilometers (km²). Think of it like the amount of paint needed to cover a surface.

Units of Measurement of Area

Area is measured in different units depending on the size of the surface. These units help us quantify the space within a shape.
The following are examples of units of measurement of area:

  1. Square Centimeters (cm²): Used for small areas like a piece of paper.
  2. Square Meters (m²): Used for larger areas like a classroom floor.
  3. Square Kilometers (km²): Used for very large areas like a city.
  4. square Millimeters (mm²): Used for very tiny areas, like the surface of a small electronic component.
  5. Square Feet (ft²): Commonly used in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom for measuring areas of rooms and houses.

Calculating Area of Rectangles

The area of a rectangle is found by multiplying its length by its breadth. This gives the total space enclosed within the rectangle.
To find the area of a rectangle, multiply its length by its breadth: area = Length × Breadth. for example, a rectangle with a length of 5cm and a breadth of 4cm has an area of 20cm² (5cm × 4cm = 20cm²).

Calculating Area of Squares

A square is a special type of rectangle where all sides are equal. Calculating its area involves multiplying the length of one side by itself.To find its area, multiply the length of one side by itself: Area = Side × Side. A square with 7cm sides has an area of 49cm² (7cm × 7cm = 49cm²).
