ESTIMATION

What is Estimation?

Estimation is finding a number that is close enough to the correct answer. It is like making a good guess or approximation.

Rounding Off Decimals to Nearest Whole Numbers

To round off a decimal to the nearest whole number, look at the first digit after the decimal point (the tenths digit).

The rules for rounding off decimals are:

  • If the tenths digit is 5 or more (5, 6, 7, 8, 9), round up the whole number part by adding 1 to it, then drop the decimal part.
  • If the tenths digit is less than 5 (0, 1, 2, 3, 4), keep the whole number part as it is, then drop the decimal part.

Examples:

  • Round 4.7 to the nearest whole number. (The tenths digit is 7, which is 5 or more, so round up 4 to 5). Answer: 5
  • Round 6.2 to the nearest whole number. (The tenths digit is 2, which is less than 5, so keep 6 as it is). Answer: 6
  • Round 10.5 to the nearest whole number. (The tenths digit is 5, so round up 10 to 11). Answer: 11

Estimation of Sums

To estimate a sum, first round off each number (addend) to the nearest whole number or a suitable place value, then add the rounded numbers.

Example:

  • Estimate the sum of 12.8 + 5.3.
    • Round 12.8 to the nearest whole number: 13
    • Round 5.3 to the nearest whole number: 5
    • Estimated sum: 13 + 5 = 18

Estimation of Products

To estimate a product, first round off each number (factor) to the nearest whole number or a suitable place value, then multiply the rounded numbers.

Example:

  • Estimate the product of 7.6 x 3.1.
    • Round 7.6 to the nearest whole number: 8
    • Round 3.1 to the nearest whole number: 3
    • Estimated product: 8 x 3 = 24

Quantitative Reasoning Involving Estimation

Quantitative reasoning problems require pupils to apply estimation skills to solve real-life scenarios or word problems.

Example:

  • A shirt costs N49.75 and a pair of trousers costs N71.20. Approximately how much will it cost to buy both items?
