Lesson Content

Movement: Throwing, Catching, and Kicking

What is Movement?

Movement is simply changing position or location. It’s how we interact with the world around us. We’ll focus on three types: throwing, catching, and kicking.

Throwing

Throwing uses your arm to send an object through the air. Think baseball, basketball, or frisbee! Remember to use your whole body (legs and core for power), keep your eye on the target, and follow through with your arm motion for accuracy and power.

Catching

Catching involves stopping a moving object. It needs good hand-eye coordination and speedy reflexes. Keep your eyes on the object, have your hands ready (fingers spread),and use soft hands to absorb the impact.

Kicking

Kicking uses your foot to propel an object or strike something. soccer, football, and martial arts use kicking. Use your whole body (legs and core for power), keep your eye on the target, and follow through with your leg motion for accuracy and power.

Safety Rules

Safety is key! Always look before you move to avoid hitting anyone. Use proper form to prevent injuries. Wear protective gear if needed (helmets, pads, gloves). Choose safe areas to play, free of obstacles. Most importantly, be kind and respectful; never throw, catch, or kick objects at people.

The following are examples of safety rules to observe when throwing, catching, and kicking:

  1. Always look before you move to avoid hitting anyone.
  2. Use proper form to prevent injuries.
  3. Wear protective gear if needed (helmets, pads, gloves).
  4. Choose safe areas to play, free of obstacles.
  5. Be kind and respectful; never throw, catch, or kick objects at people.
  6. ensure the playing area is free from hazards like rocks, holes, or sharp objects.
  7. Warm up before engaging in throwing, catching, or kicking activities to prevent muscle strains.
  8. Cool down and stretch after activities to reduce muscle soreness.
  9. Use appropriate equipment for the activity, such as the right size ball for kicking.
  10. Stay hydrated by drinking water before, during, and after physical activities.

Lesson Evaluation

To evaluate the learning, the teacher asks pupils to:

  1. What are three critically important things to remember when throwing?
  2. What are three important things to remember when catching?
  3. What are three important things to remember when kicking?
  4. Name two safety rules for these activities.
  5. Why is safety critically important when throwing, catching, and kicking?

The teacher will also observe:

  1. Pupils’ understanding of concepts
  2. Pupils’ ability to perform the movements
  3. Pupils’ adherence to safety rules

Assignment/Homework

  3. Draw a picture of yourself throwing, catching, or kicking a ball.

Differentiation

  • For slower learners: Provide one-on-one assistance and use simpler instructions.
  • For advanced learners: Challenge with more complex throwing, catching, and kicking activities.
  • For visual/auditory/kinesthetic learners: Use visual aids, verbal instructions, and hands-on practice to cater to different learning styles.

Note for Teachers
