Lesson Content/Board Summary

THE MEANING OF HADITH

Definition of Hadith

Hadith refers to the sayings, actions, or approvals of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is a collection of traditions containing sayings of the Prophet Muhammad which, with the Quran, constitute the main source of guidance for Muslims.

Differences between Hadith and Sunnah

While often used interchangeably, there is a distinction between Hadith and Sunnah:

  • Hadith: Refers to the narration or report of the Prophet Muhammad’s words, actions, or approvals. It is the text itself.
  • Sunnah: Refers to the actual practice, way, or tradition of the Prophet Muhammad. It is the practical application of the Hadith or the Prophet’s established practice that Muslims follow.
  • In simple terms, Hadith is the “recorded saying or action,” while Sunnah is the “actual practice or example.”

Reading and Explanation of the Hadith Book

Hadith books are collections of narrations about Prophet Muhammad. When reading a Hadith book, each Hadith is typically presented with:

  • Chain of Narration (Isnad): This lists the series of trustworthy individuals who transmitted the Hadith from the Prophet until it was recorded.
  • Text (Matn): This is the actual saying, action, or approval of the Prophet.
  • Explanation: After the text, scholars provide explanations of the Hadith, detailing its meaning, context, and the lessons or rulings derived from it. This helps Muslims understand and apply the Hadith correctly in their lives.
