Instructional Materials

The teacher will teach this lesson with the aid of:

  • A small container of clean sand or dust.
  • A chart illustrating the steps of Tayammum.
  • A small stone.

Rationale for the Lesson

This lesson helps pupils understand an important purification method in Islam called Tayammum. It teaches them how to perform purification when water is unavailable or cannot be used, ensuring they can always fulfill their religious obligations like prayer.

Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

Pupils are familiar with the concept of Taharah (purification) and have learned about Wudhu (ablution) and Ghusl (ritual bath).

Lesson Content/Board Summary

AT- TAHARAH

At-Tayammum

Tayammum is the act of performing ritual purification with clean earth, sand, or dust when water is not available or cannot be used for Wudhu or Ghusl.

When Tayammum is Performed:

  • When water is not available for Wudhu or Ghusl.
  • When a person is ill and using water could worsen their condition.
  • When water is available but only in a very limited quantity, just enough for drinking.
  • When there is fear of missing the prayer time if one waits to find water.
  • When there is a risk of harm from using water due to extreme cold and no means to warm it.

How Tayammum is Performed (Steps):

  1. Make the intention (Niyyah) to perform Tayammum for purification.
  2. Strike the palms of both hands lightly on a clean surface (sand, earth, stone).
  3. Wipe the face once with the palms of both hands.
  4. Strike the palms of both hands lightly on the clean surface again.
  5. Wipe the right arm (from fingers to elbow) with the left hand, then wipe the left arm (from fingers to elbow) with the right hand.

Things That Vitiate (Break) Tayammum:

  • Any act that breaks Wudhu (e.g., passing wind, urinating, defecating, deep sleep).
  • The availability of water, if the reason for performing Tayammum was lack of water.
  • The removal of the excuse that necessitated Tayammum (e.g., recovery from illness that prevented water use).

Materials for Tayammum

Tayammum can be performed using any clean earth, sand, or stone. Other clean dry surfaces like ice (if it’s clean and produces dry dust when scraped) can also be used if they are free from impurities.

Lesson Keywords

  • Tayammum – Ritual purification with clean earth/sand.
  • Taharah – Purity or cleanliness in Islam.
  • Wudhu – Ritual ablution with water.
  • Ghusl – Ritual full-body wash with water.
  • Niyyah – Intention.

Differentiation

For pupils who grasp the concept quickly, the teacher will encourage them to research more about the different scholarly opinions on what constitutes “clean earth” for Tayammum. For struggling pupils, the teacher will provide one-on-one guidance during the practical demonstration and simplify explanations, using visual aids more extensively.

Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Ensure the sand or dust used for demonstration is genuinely clean and free from impurities. Emphasize the ease and flexibility Islam offers through Tayammum. Encourage pupils to practice the steps until they are confident.
