Lesson Content/Board Summary

AL-GHUSL (The Ritual Bath)

Definition of Ghusl

Ghusl is a ritual full-body purification bath performed to cleanse the body from major impurities (Janabah) and make it permissible to perform acts of worship like Salah (prayer) and Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba).

Things that necessitate Ghusl

Ghusl becomes obligatory in the following situations:

  • Janabah: Sexual impurity resulting from sexual intercourse or seminal discharge.
  • Hayd: Menstruation (monthly period) for women.
  • Nifas: Post-natal bleeding after childbirth for women.
  • Death: Washing the body of a deceased Muslim (except for martyrs).
  • Conversion to Islam: Some scholars recommend it for new converts.

Description/Method of Performing Ghusl

The recommended steps for performing Ghusl are:

  • Step 1: Intention (Niyyah): Make the intention in your heart to perform Ghusl for purification.
  • Step 2: Wash Hands: Wash both hands up to the wrists three times.
  • Step 3: Wash Private Parts: Wash the private parts thoroughly to remove any impurities.
  • Step 4: Perform Wudu: Perform a complete Wudu (ablution) as done for prayer, including washing the feet.
  • Step 5: Pour Water over Head: Pour water over the head three times, ensuring it reaches the roots of the hair.
  • Step 6: Wash Right Side: Pour water over the entire right side of the body three times, ensuring water reaches all parts.
  • Step 7: Wash Left Side: Pour water over the entire left side of the body three times, ensuring water reaches all parts.
  • Step 8: Rub Body: Rub the entire body with your hands to ensure water has reached all areas, including armpits, navel, and between toes.
