Rationale for the Lesson

This lesson helps pupils understand Hadith as the second primary source of Islamic law. It enables them to distinguish between authentic and inauthentic Hadith, which is important for practicing Islam correctly and avoiding misconceptions.

Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

Pupils have basic knowledge of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) and the Quran as the first source of Islamic law.

Lesson Content/Board Summary

Hadith of the Holy Prophet Muhammad S.A.W.

Definition of Hadith

Hadith (plural: Ahadith) refers to the sayings, actions, approvals, or characteristics of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.). It serves as the second primary source of Islamic law after the Holy Quran.

Forms of Hadith

The following are the forms of Hadith:

  • Qawli Hadith: These are the verbal sayings or utterances of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.).
  • Fi’li Hadith: These describe the actions and practices of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.).
  • Taqriri Hadith: These are the silent approvals or disapprovals of Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) concerning an action or saying of a companion.

Components of Hadith: Isnad and Matn

Every Hadith consists of two main parts:

  • Isnad (Chain of Narrators): This is the chain of individuals who transmitted the Hadith from the Prophet (S.A.W.) down to the one who recorded it. It verifies the authenticity of the Hadith by tracing its origin.
  • Matn (Text of the Hadith): This is the actual text or content of the Hadith, containing the Prophet’s saying, action, or approval.

Criteria for Authenticity of Hadith

For a Hadith to be considered authentic (Sahih), it must meet the following criteria:

  • Sound Chain of Narrators (Isnad): The chain of narrators must be continuous, without any missing links.
  • Integrity of Narrators (‘Adalah): All narrators in the chain must be known for their piety, honesty, and good character.
  • Accuracy of Narrators (Dabt): All narrators must have excellent memory and precision in transmitting the Hadith without errors.
  • Conformity with the Quran and other Authentic Hadith: The Hadith’s content should not contradict the Quran or other established authentic Hadith.
  • Absence of Defects (‘Illah): There should be no hidden defects or subtle flaws in either the Isnad or the Matn that would undermine its authenticity.

How to Identify an Authentic Hadith

To identify an authentic Hadith, one must:

  1. Examine the Isnad (chain of narrators) to ensure it is continuous and complete.
  2. Investigate the character and memory of each narrator in the chain.
  3. Analyze the Matn (text) to ensure it does not contradict the Quran or well-established Sunnah.
  4. Check for any hidden defects in the Hadith.
