Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge
Pupils have prior knowledge of jumping in sports and basic athletic movements.
Lesson Content
Stages in Long Jump
The long jump involves running and jumping for maximum distance. It has five key stages:
The stages in long jump are:
- run-Up: The athlete runs fast, maintaining control to build speed and momentum.
- Take-Off: Leaping off one foot at the take-off board, transferring horizontal speed into upward and forward motion.
- Flight: Maintaining proper body posture in the air to optimize distance.
- Landing: Landing feet-first in the sand pit, minimizing backward fall.
- Recovery: Standing and leaving the pit without disqualification.
Stages of the Long Jump
- Approach: build controlled speed on the runway.
- Take-off: plant one foot near the line and drive upward and forward.
- Flight: control the arms and legs while moving through the air.
- Landing: bring both feet forward and bend the knees in the sand.
The jump is measured to the nearest mark made behind the take-off line.
Teaching Methods
To deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following methods: Direct instruction, Presentation, Guided practice, Question and answer, Summary, and Reinforcement.
Instructional Procedures
To deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following steps:
Step 1: Introduction
Time: 5 mins
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: Introduce the topic by asking pupils what they know about jumping in sports.
Pupils’ Activity: Respond with previous knowledge on jumping in athletics.
Learning Point: Pupils recall prior knowledge and are ready to explore the long jump stages.
Step 2: Run-Up Stage
time: 8 mins
Teaching Skill: Description and Visual Presentation
Teacher’s Activity: Explain the importance of a fast, controlled run-up and demonstrate it.
Pupils’ Activity: Observe the demonstration and try to imitate the run-up.
learning Point: Pupils understand the significance of the run-up in building momentum.
Step 3: Take-Off Stage
Time: 7 mins
Teaching Skill: Demonstration and Guided Practice
Teacher’s Activity: Show the proper technique for taking off on one foot at the board.
Pupils’ Activity: Practice taking off using the right technique under guidance.Learning Point: Pupils learn to apply the correct take-off technique for maximum distance.
Step 4: Flight and Landing
Time: 10 mins
Teaching Skill: Demonstration and Physical Participation
Teacher’s Activity: Describe and demonstrate proper body posture during flight and landing.
Pupils’ Activity: Participate in a practice session focusing on body posture and landing safely.
Learning Point: Pupils practice balancing their bodies during flight and ensure safe landings.
Step 5: Recovery Stage
Time: 5 mins
Teaching Skill: Description and Question and Answer
Teacher’s Activity: Explain the recovery stage after landing and how athletes maintain balance.
Pupils’ Activity: Ask and answer questions related to recovery after a long jump.
Learning Point: Pupils understand how to recover quickly and maintain balance after landing.
Step 6: Note-Taking
Time: 2 mins
Teaching Skill: Discussion and Self-assessment
Teacher’s Activity: Distribute the classroom note for pupils to copy. Ask them to review it.
pupils’ Activity: Copy the classroom note and answer evaluation questions.
Learning Point: Pupils evaluate their understanding of the stages in long jump.
Step 7: Evaluation/Review
Time: 2 mins
Teaching Skill: Review
Teacher’s Activity: Ask pupils questions about the stages of long jump to assess their understanding.
Pupils’ Activity: Answer the questions asked by the teacher.
Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate their understanding of the lesson.
Step 8: conclusion
Time: 3 mins
Teaching Skill: summary and Reinforcement
Teacher’s Activity: Summarize the stages of long jump and ask pupils to recall the steps.
Pupils’ Activity: Recall the stages of long jump as explained during the lesson.
Learning Point: Pupils consolidate their knowledge of the key stages involved in long jump.
Lesson Keywords
- Run-Up – the initial sprint to gain momentum.
- Take-Off – The jump from the board to initiate flight.
- Flight – The airborne phase where body posture is crucial.
- Landing – The act of touching down in the sand pit.
- Recovery – Regaining balance after landing.
Lesson Evaluation
To evaluate the learning, the teacher asks pupils to:
- Name the stages in the long jump.
- Explain why a good run-up is important in long jump.
- Demonstrate the proper take-off technique.
- What should the jumper do during the flight stage to maximize distance?
- Describe how a jumper should land and recover.
Assignment/Homework
- Research famous long jumpers and their techniques.
- Practice the run-up and take-off techniques at home.
- Write a short paragraph on the importance of each stage in long jump.
Differentiation
- For slower learners: Provide one-on-one guidance during practice.
- For advanced learners: challenge them to refine their techniques and try different approaches to the long jump.
- For visual/auditory/kinesthetic learners: Use diagrams, verbal explanations, and physical demonstrations to cater to different learning styles.
Note for Teachers
Ensure the long jump pit is safe and properly marked. Provide clear demonstrations and hands-on practice for each stage.Encourage pupils to ask questions and provide constructive feedback.
