Basic Skills in High Jump

The high jump is a track and field event where athletes jump over a horizontal bar without knocking it down. Several techniques exist:

The following are basic skills in high jump:

  1. The Flop: The athlete jumps with their back to the bar, landing on their back. This is the most common technique.
  2. The Straddle: The athlete clears the bar facing downwards.
  3. The Western Roll: The athlete jumps sideways and rolls over the bar.
  4. the Eastern Roll: The athlete rolls over the bar with their body slightly tilted to the side.
  5. The Scissors: The athlete kicks one leg over the bar, followed by the other,in a scissoring motion.

Basic High-jump Skills

The high jump has an approach, take-off, flight and landing. The athlete uses a controlled curved or angled run, takes off from one foot, lifts the body over the bar and lands on the back or shoulders on a proper mat.

Beginners practise without a hard bar and at a low height. The landing area must be clear, dry and correctly arranged before every attempt.

Teaching Methods

To deliver this lesson,‌ ⁤the teacher will⁤ adopt⁤ the following methods: Interactive method, Exhibition, Guided Practice, Group Work, Oral Questions.

Instructional Procedures

to deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following steps:

Step 1: Introduction (Set Induction)

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: introduces the lesson by explaining what high jump is, showing images of the activity.
Pupils’ Activity: Listen attentively, observe images, and respond to questions on high jump definition.

Step 2: The Flop Technique

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration and guided practice
Teacher’s activity: Explains the “Flop” method in high jump and demonstrates how it is indeed done.
Pupils’ Activity: Watch the demonstration and attempt to mimic the “Flop” technique.

Step 3: Straddle and Western Roll

Time: 10 minutes
