Lesson Content

What are the Skills in Long Jump?

Long jump is a field event where athletes combine speed, strength, and agility to jump as far as possible. It requires skill and practice.

Run-up:

The approach run where the athlete builds speed, maintaining a consistent stride for a powerful take-off.

take-off:

the jump from one foot, pushing off the take-off board using leg muscles to generate power and lift the body.

Flight:

The athlete uses techniques like the hang, sail, or hitch-kick to maximize distance in the air, controlling body position to stay airborne.

Landing:

Landing feet first in the sandpit, extending legs forward and using arms for balance, aiming for a soft and safe landing.

Long-jump Skill Sequence

The long jump has four connected phases: approach run, take-off, flight and landing. The athlete builds controlled speed, places one foot firmly on the take-off board or marked area, drives the free knee and arms upward, then lands with both feet forward while bending the knees.

A legal jump is measured from the take-off line to the nearest mark made in the landing area. Pupils should use a level runway and soft sand or mat, wait until the landing area is clear and practise each phase before attempting a full jump.

teaching Methods

To deliver this lesson,‌ ⁤the teacher will⁤ adopt⁤ the following methods: Discussion, Exhibition, Practical Activity

Instructional Procedures

To deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following steps:

Lesson keywords

  • Run-up – The approach run to build speed.
  • take-off – The jump from one foot.
  • Flight – Techniques used to maximize distance in the air.
  • Landing – Landing feet first in the sandpit.

Lesson Evaluation

To evaluate the learning, the teacher asks pupils to:

  1. What are the four main skills in long jump?
  2. How does the run-up help an athlete in long jump?
  3. Why is the take-off phase vital in long jump?
  4. What are some techniques used during the flight phase?
  5. How should an athlete land in long jump?

Assignment/Homework

  1. Research and write a short paragraph on the history of long jump in Nigeria.
  2. Practice the run-up technique at home, focusing on maintaining a consistent stride.
  3. Draw a diagram illustrating the four main skills in long jump.

Differentiation

  • For slower learners: Provide one-on-one assistance and simplified instructions.
  • For advanced learners: Challenge them to experiment with different flight techniques.
  • For visual/auditory/kinesthetic learners: Use visual aids, verbal explanations, and hands-on practice to cater to different learning styles.

Note for Teachers

Ensure adequate space and safety measures are in place before conducting practical activities. Provide constructive feedback to pupils during practice sessions to help them improve their technique.
