Approximation

Approximation is the process of finding a value close to the actual number. It is often used when exact values are not needed or when quick mental calculations are required.

Rounding Off Numbers

Rounding off means changing a number to the nearest 10, 100, or 1000 depending on the place value to make it easier to work with.

The following are the rules for rounding off numbers:

  1. Identify the place value you are rounding to (10, 100, or 1000).
  2. Look at the digit to the right of that place value.
  3. If the digit is 5 or more, round up by adding 1 to the rounding digit.
  4. If the digit is less than 5, keep the rounding digit the same and change the remaining digits to zero.

Examples include:

  1. Round 78 to the nearest 10
    • The digit at ones place is 8 (≥5), so we round up.
    • 78 ≈ 80.
  2. Round 236 to the nearest 100
    • The tens digit is 3 (<5), so we round down.
    • 236 ≈ 200.
  3. Round 4,780 to the nearest 1000
    • The hundreds digit is 7 (≥5), so we round up.
    • 4,780 ≈ 5,000.

Approximate Values in Basic Arithmetic Operations

Approximation can be used in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to estimate answers quickly.

The following are examples:

  1. Addition:
    • 48 + 73 ≈ 50 + 70 = 120
  2. Subtraction:
    • 164 – 78 ≈ 160 – 80 = 80
  3. Multiplication:
    • 49 × 21 ≈ 50 × 20 = 1000
  4. Division:
    • 198 ÷ 50 ≈ 200 ÷ 50 = 4

Approximations help us check if answers to calculations are reasonable and to estimate results faster in everyday activities such as shopping, budgeting, and measuring.
