Introduction to Surah an-Nas

Surah an-Nas is the 114th and last chapter of the Holy Qur’an. It is a very short Surah with six verses. The name “An-Nas” means “Mankind” or “The People” in Arabic. This Surah teaches us to seek protection from Allah against all evil, especially from the whispers of Shaytan (Satan) and evil people.

Arabic Text of Surah an-Nas with Transliteration and Meaning

1. بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

   Bismi Allahi alrrahmani alrraheemi

   In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

2. قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ

   Qul aAAoozhu birabbi alnnasi

   Say, “I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,

3. مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ

   Maliki alnnasi

   The Sovereign of mankind,

4. إِلَٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ

   Ilahi alnnasi

   The God of mankind,

5. مِن شَرِّ ٱلْوَسْوَاسِ ٱلْخَنَّاسِ

   Min sharri alwaswasi alkhannasi

   From the evil of the retreating whisperer –

6. ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ

   Allazee yuwaswisu fee sudoorin nasi

   Who whispers into the hearts of mankind –

7. مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ

   Mina aljinnati wannasi

   From among the jinn and mankind.”

Tips for Memorising Surah an-Nas

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher plays an audio recording or recites the next two verses (Ilahi alnnasi, Min sharri alwaswasi alkhannasi). The teacher then recites each verse slowly, asking pupils to repeat after him/her several times. The teacher also helps pupils connect these verses with the previous ones.
