Rationale for the Lesson

This lesson is essential as Surah al-Fatihah is the opening chapter of the Qur’an and is recited in every unit of daily prayers (Salat). Memorising it correctly from an early age helps pupils establish a strong foundation in Islamic practice and develop a connection with the Holy Qur’an.

The Text of Surah al-Fatihah for Memorisation

Surah al-Fatihah (The Opening) consists of seven verses. Pupils will memorise it verse by verse with correct pronunciation.

1. بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
   (Bismi Allahi Ar-Rahmani Ar-Rahim)
   In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
2. ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
   (Al-Hamdu Lillahi Rabbi Al-‘Alamin)
   All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
3. ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
   (Ar-Rahmani Ar-Rahim)
   The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
4. مَٰلِكِ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
   (Maliki Yawmi Ad-Din)
   Master of the Day of Judgment.
5. إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ
   (Iyyaka Na’budu Wa Iyyaka Nasta’in)
   You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.
6. ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ
   (Ihdina As-Sirata Al-Mustaqim)
   Guide us to the straight path.
7. صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ
   (Sirata Al-Ladhina An’amta ‘Alayhim Ghayri Al-Maghdubi ‘Alayhim Wa La Ad-Dallin)
   The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] wrath or of those who are astray.

Importance of Correct Recitation

It is important to recite Surah al-Fatihah correctly because:

Step 1: Introduction

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils with “Assalamu Alaikum” and asks them to respond. The teacher then reminds them about the importance of the Qur’an and briefly revises any previous short Surahs they might have learned. Teacher’s Activity: The teacher recites the first verse (Basmalah) slowly and clearly, then asks the pupils to repeat it together several times. The teacher corrects any pronunciation errors immediately. This is repeated for the second and third verses.
