Lesson Content/Board Summary

EWÌ (POETRY)

Itumo Ewì (Meaning of Poetry)

Ewì jẹ́ ọ̀kan lára àwọn iṣẹ́ lítíréṣò àti àṣà Yoruba. Ó jẹ́ ọ̀nà tí a fi ń fi ìrònú, ìfẹ́, ìdámùn, àti àwọn ìṣẹlẹ̀ láwùjọ hàn nípa lilo àwọn òrò tí a tò lọ́nà tí ó ní ìlù àti ìkàlẹ̀. (Poetry is one of the literary works and traditions of the Yoruba. It is a way of expressing thoughts, feelings, concerns, and societal events by using words arranged in a rhythmic and structured manner.)

Kókó Òrò Ewì Lórí Ohun Tí ń lọ Láwùjọ (Keywords in Poetry about Societal Happenings)

Kókó òrò ni àwọn òrò tàbí gbólóhùn tí ó ṣe pàtàkì tí ó sì gbé ìtumọ̀ tabàbí ìfiranṣẹ́ tó ga jù lọ lọ́wọ́ nínú ewì. (Keywords are important words or phrases that carry the main meaning or message in a poem. Finding these keywords helps one understand what the poem is about, especially if it’s about societal events.)

Kíka àti Ṣíṣe Àlàyé Ewì (Reading and Explaining Poetry)

Kíka ewì gbọ́dọ̀ ní ìdánrára àti ìpètèsí. A gbọ́dọ̀ ka àwọn òrò pẹ̀lú ìpètèsí tó tọ́ àti àwọn ìmìsí tó yẹ. Lẹ́yìn kíka, a ó wá ṣe àlàyé ewì náà, ìtumọ̀ rẹ̀, àti ìfiranṣẹ́ rẹ̀. (Reading poetry must have expression and rhythm. Words must be read with proper rhythm and pauses. After reading, we will explain the poem, its meaning, and its message.)

Ṣíṣe Àmì sí Àwọn Òrò Kókó (Marking Keywords)

Lẹ́yìn tí a bá ka ewì tan, a lè ṣe àmì sí àwọn òrò kókó náà nínú ìwé tàbí lórí pátákó. A lè fi ìlà sí abẹ́ wọn, tàbí ka yí wọn po. Èyí máa ń ran ní lọ́wọ́ láti rántí àwọn apá tó ṣe pàtàkì nínú ewì. Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques

Discussion, Lecture, Demonstration, Question and Answer, Visual Aids

Instructional Procedures

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher greets the pupils and asks if they know any Yoruba songs or rhymes. The teacher then relates songs/rhymes to poetry and introduces the topic for the day: Ewì (Poetry).
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond to greetings, mention some Yoruba songs/rhymes, and listen attentively to the introduction.
Learning Point: Pupils connect their existing knowledge of songs and rhymes to the concept of poetry.

Step 2: Itumo Lítíréṣò Ewì

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Definition
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher defines Ewì (poetry) in simple Yoruba, explaining that it is a form of literature used to express thoughts and feelings. The teacher writes the definition on the board.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen, copy the definition into their notebooks, and ask questions for clarity.
Learning Point: Pupils understand the basic meaning of Yoruba poetry.

Step 3: Kíka Ewì

Time: 8 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration/Reading
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher reads a selected simple Yoruba poem from a poetry book or the board, ensuring clear pronunciation, rhythm, and appropriate pauses. The teacher might read it twice.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen carefully to the teacher’s reading, paying attention to the pronunciation and flow.
Learning Point: Pupils hear a well-read Yoruba poem and develop an appreciation for its sound.

Step 4: Ṣíṣe Àlàyé Ewì Tí A Kà

Time: 8 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation/Interpretation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains the meaning of the poem that was just read, line by line or stanza by stanza, ensuring pupils understand its message and context. The teacher also highlights any cultural references.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen to the explanation, contribute their interpretations, and ask questions about unclear parts.
Learning Point: Pupils grasp the meaning and message conveyed by the poem.

Step 5: Kókó Òrò Ewì Lórí Ohun Tí ń lọ Láwùjọ

Time: 7 minutes
Teaching Skill: Guiding/Identification

Pupils’ Activity: Pupils practice marking keywords in their notebooks under the teacher’s guidance.
Learning Point: Pupils develop the practical skill of identifying and marking keywords in a poem.

Step 7: Evaluation/Review

Time: 5 minutes

Teaching Skill: Questioning/Assessment

Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:

  1. Kí ni Ewì? (What is Poetry?)
  2. Darukọ kókó òrò méjì nínú ewì tí a kà lónìí. (Mention two keywords from the poem we read today.)
  3. Ṣe àlàyé ìfiranṣẹ́ ewì náà ní sokí. (Explain the message of the poem briefly.)

Step 8: Conclusion

Time: 2 minutes
Teaching Skill: Summarization
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher summarizes the main points of the lesson, reiterating the definition of Ewì, the importance of keywords, and how to explain a poem. The teacher gives an assignment to read a short poem and identify its keywords.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen to the summary and copy the assignment.
Learning Point: Pupils consolidate their learning and prepare for further practice.

Lesson Keywords

  • Ewì – Poetry
  • Kókó òrò – Keywords
  • Àlàyé – Explanation
  • Kíka – Reading
  • Ìlù – Rhythm

Differentiation

For pupils who find it challenging, the teacher will provide simpler poems with fewer complex words and offer more individual guidance during keyword identification. Advanced learners will be encouraged to read more complex poems and attempt to write a short, simple poem of their own, or identify societal issues in more abstract poems.

Note for teachers using this lesson plan

Teachers should select a Yoruba poem that is appropriate for the age and understanding level of Primary 4 pupils. Encourage active participation and create a supportive environment where pupils feel comfortable sharing their interpretations of the poem. Using visual aids like keyword cards can enhance understanding.
