What is Storage of crops?
Crop storage keeps harvested crops safe from spoiling or damage before sale or consumption. Methods vary depending on the crop type.
Some of the methods of storing crops:
There are various methods for storing crops to prevent spoilage and maintain their quality. These include:
- Silos: Tall structures for grains like maize, rice, and wheat, protecting them from moisture and pests.
- Barns: Structures for crops like yams, potatoes, and cassava, keeping them cool and dry.
- Cribs: Containers with slats for ventilation, often used for maize, allowing air circulation to prevent mold.
- Bags: Used for beans, groundnuts, and grains, stored in cool, dry places.
- Hermetic Storage: Airtight containers or bags that prevent insect infestation and maintain grain quality.
- Conventional granaries: Elevated structures made of local materials, providing ventilation and protection from pests.
- bottling: For perishables like fruits and vegetables; produce is cleaned, sometimes cooked, and sealed in glass bottles to extend shelf life.
- Freezing: Another method for perishables like vegetables, fruits, and some dairy products; crops are cleaned, sometimes blanched, and frozen for preservation.
- Cold Storage: For perishables like tomatoes, fruits, and dairy products; cold rooms or refrigerators slow ripening and keep items fresh.
What is Marketing?
Marketing involves steps to sell crops after harvest. Main steps include:
- Packaging: Crops are cleaned and packed for sale; special packaging is used for delicate crops.
- Grading: Sorting crops by quality to ensure consistent standards and pricing.
- Branding: Creating a unique identity for the crops to differentiate them in the market.
- Advertising: Farmers use signs, posters, or media to advertise their crops.
