Meaning Of Diseases In Plants
Plant diseases refer to conditions that impair the normal growth, structure, or function of a plant. This means that diseased plants often show signs like yellowing leaves, wilting, or stunted growth.
Causes of Diseases in Plants:
Plant diseases can be caused by various factors, including microorganisms and environmental conditions. These include:
- fungi – Cause diseases like mildew and rust. Examples include late blight in potatoes, and leaf spot in tomatoes.
- Bacteria – Lead to conditions such as wilting and soft rot. Examples include bacterial blight in rice,and crown gall in stone fruits.
- Viruses – Result in mosaic patterns on leaves and stunted growth. Examples include tobacco mosaic virus, and cassava mosaic disease.
- Nematodes – Microscopic worms that damage plant roots. Examples include root-knot nematodes in vegetables, and cyst nematodes in soybeans.
- Environmental factors – Such as poor drainage or lack of nutrients. Examples include blossom-end rot in tomatoes due to calcium deficiency, and leaf scorch due to drought stress.
