The Hadith
Hadith 3: The Pillars of Islam
Translation: On the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “Islam has been built on five [pillars]: testifying that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, paying the zakat, making the pilgrimage to the House, and fasting in Ramadan.” (Recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
Meaning of Hadith 3
This Hadith explains that the religion of Islam is founded upon five essential practices, likened to pillars supporting a building. Just as a building cannot stand without its pillars, a Muslim’s faith and practice are incomplete without these five fundamental acts of worship.
Lessons from Hadith 3
- The five pillars are the fundamental foundation of Islam.
- The Shahada (declaration of faith) is the primary belief in the oneness of Allah and the prophethood of Muhammad.
- Salat (prayer) is a mandatory daily act of worship that connects a Muslim directly with Allah.
- Zakat (charity) is an obligatory purification of wealth, given to the needy, which promotes social justice.
- Sawm (fasting) in the month of Ramadan teaches self-discipline, patience, and empathy for the less fortunate.
- Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) is a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for those who are physically and financially able.
Hadith 7: Sincerity and Good Advice
Translation: On the authority of Tamim Al-Dari that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The religion is sincerity.” We said: “To whom?” He said: “To Allah, to His Book, to His Messenger, to the leaders of the Muslims and to their common folk.” (Recorded by Muslim)
Meaning of Hadith 7
This Hadith highlights that the core essence of Islam is “Nasiha,” which encompasses sincerity, good will, and giving good advice. It clarifies that this sincerity is not limited to a single aspect but extends to Allah, His revelations, His Prophet, and all members of the Muslim community, both leaders and ordinary people.
Lessons from Hadith 7
- Sincerity (Nasiha) is a central principle and a vital part of the Islamic faith.
- Sincerity to Allah involves believing in His oneness, obeying His commands, and avoiding His prohibitions.
- Sincerity to His Book (the Quran) means believing in its truth, reciting it, understanding its meanings, and acting upon its teachings.
- Sincerity to His Messenger (Prophet Muhammad) means believing in his message, following his Sunnah (way of life), and loving him.
- Sincerity to Muslim leaders involves obeying them in good deeds, advising them kindly when necessary, and praying for their guidance.
- Sincerity to common Muslims means wishing good for them, helping them, advising them towards good, and protecting their rights.

Teacher Guide for Using This Lesson Plan
Before the lesson, ensure you have the Arabic text and accurate English translations of Hadith 3 and 7 clearly written or printed for display. Practice reciting the Arabic text to ensure correct pronunciation. Begin by activating students’ prior knowledge of Hadith. Present each Hadith systematically, first the Arabic, then the English translation, followed by a clear explanation of its meaning and a discussion of its practical lessons. Encourage student participation through questions and discussions throughout the lesson. Students should copy the Board Summary notes after the main teaching and discussion to ensure they have accurate records. Pay attention to students’ understanding during the evaluation questions and provide immediate feedback. Support weaker learners by simplifying explanations and offering more repetition, while challenging faster learners with additional research or deeper analysis.
