عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ: ((أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُقَاتِلَ النَّاسَ حَتَّى يَشْهَدُوا أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ وَيُقِيمُوا الصَّلاةَ وَيُؤْتُوا الزَّكَاةَ؛ فَإِذَا فَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ عَصَمُوا مِنِّي دِمَاءَهُمْ وَأَمْوَالَهُمْ إِلاَّ بِحَقِّ الإِسْلامِ وَحِسَابُهُمْ عَلَى اللهِ تَعَالَى)) رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ وَمُسْلِمٌ.

Translation:

On the authority of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “I have been commanded to fight against people until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and they establish prayer and pay Zakat. If they do that, their blood and wealth are safe from me, except for what is due to them by the right of Islam, and their reckoning is with Allah.” (Recorded by Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Meaning of Hadith 8

“I have been commanded to fight against people until they testify…”: This refers to establishing the authority of Islam and ensuring people have the freedom to practice it. It is about removing obstacles to the message of Islam and ensuring justice, not necessarily aggressive warfare against all non-Muslims.
“testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (Shahada)”: This is the declaration of faith, the first and most important pillar of Islam. It means believing in the Oneness of Allah and accepting Prophet Muhammad as His final messenger.
“establish prayer (Salah)”: This is the second pillar, the ritual prayers performed five times a day. It is a direct connection between a Muslim and Allah.
“pay Zakat”: This is the third pillar, the obligatory charity given to the poor and needy. It plays a vital role in social justice and wealth redistribution in Islam.
“their blood and wealth are safe from me, except for what is due to them by the right of Islam”: Once these three pillars are fulfilled, a person is considered a Muslim, and their life and property become sacred and protected. “Except for what is due by the right of Islam” refers to legal Islamic penalties (e.g., for murder, theft, or not paying Zakat) which are administered by a legitimate Islamic authority.
“and their reckoning is with Allah”: This emphasizes that only Allah knows the true inner faith and intentions of a person. Outwardly, we judge people based on their adherence to these fundamental practices.
