Meaning of Hadith 4

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and he is the truthful, the believed, narrated to us: “Verily the creation of each one of you is brought together in his mother’s womb for forty days in the form of a nutfah (drop of fluid), then he becomes an ‘alaqah (clot of blood) for a like period, then a mudghah (morsel of flesh) for a like period, then there is sent to him the angel who blows the soul into him and who is commanded with four words: to write down his rizq (provision), his ajal (life-span), his ‘amal (deeds), and whether he will be sa’eed (happy/blessed) or shaqi (wretched/doomed). By Allah, other than Whom there is no god, one of you may perform the deeds of the people of Paradise until there is but an arm’s length between him and it, and then what has been written overtakes him and he performs the deeds of the people of the Hellfire and enters it. And verily one of you may perform the deeds of the Hellfire until there is but an arm’s length between him and it, and then what has been written overtakes him and he performs the deeds of the people of Paradise and enters it.” Related by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Lessons Learnt from Hadith 4

The following are important lessons from Hadith 4:

Stages of Human Creation: The Hadith explains the miraculous stages of human development in the womb: nutfah (sperm drop), ‘alaqah (clot of blood), and mudghah (morsel of flesh), each lasting 40 days.
Divine Decree (Qadar): It emphasizes that Allah has decreed four things for every individual even before birth: their provision (rizq), lifespan (ajal), deeds (‘amal), and whether they will be happy (sa’eed) or wretched (shaqi) in the Hereafter.
The Role of the Angel: An angel is sent to blow the soul into the fetus and record the four decrees.
Importance of the End: The Hadith teaches that one’s final actions are what truly count. A person may do good deeds for a long time but end badly, and vice versa. This highlights the need for constant effort and sincerity in worship.
Hope and Fear: It instills both hope (that Allah can change one’s destiny for the better if they strive) and fear (that one should not become complacent with their good deeds).
Striving for Good: Muslims are encouraged to strive for good deeds throughout their lives and seek Allah’s guidance and mercy until their very last breath.
