Reading of Hadith 9

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say:

Arabic: “مَا نَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْهُ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ، وَمَا أَمَرْتُكُمْ بِهِ فَأْتُوا مِنْهُ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ، فَإِنَّمَا أَهْلَكَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ كَثْرَةُ مَسَائِلِهِمْ وَاخْتِلَافُهُمْ عَلَى أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ.”

English Translation: “What I have forbidden for you, avoid. What I have commanded you to do, do as much of it as you can. Verily, the people before you were ruined only because of their excessive questioning and their disagreeing with their Prophets.”

Meaning of Hadith 9

This Hadith teaches Muslims two fundamental principles of Islam:

1. Avoiding Prohibitions: Muslims must completely abstain from anything that Allah and His Messenger have forbidden (Haram). There is no flexibility in avoiding forbidden acts.

2. Performing Commands: Muslims must strive to fulfill all that Allah and His Messenger have commanded (Wajib/Fard) to the best of their ability. If one cannot do it completely, they should do what they can.

The Hadith also warns against the dangers of excessive questioning and disputing with prophets, which led to the destruction of previous nations. This implies that Muslims should accept religious teachings with humility and avoid creating unnecessary difficulties for themselves.
