Reference Materials

  • 9 – Years Basic Education Curriculum
  • Abuja educational resource center Scheme of Work
  • NAPPS National Unified Scheme of Work
  • online Data
  • Relevant textbooks

Instructional Materials

To deliver this lesson, the teacher will use the following materials:

  • Whiteboard or chart paper
  • Markers or crayons
  • Examples of designs showcasing balance, contrast, and unity
  • Audio clips of music and noise

Rationale for the Lesson

Understanding design principles helps pupils develop an thankfulness for art and visual communication. Differentiating between music and noise enhances their auditory perception and understanding of sound association.

Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

Pupils are familiar with basic sounds and visual elements.

Lesson Content

Principles Of Design

The Principles Of Design are guidelines that help create visually appealing and effective designs. They are like the rules of art that make things look good and organized. The main principles are:

  1. Balance: This means making sure the design looks stable and not tilted. It’s like balancing on a seesaw, where both sides need to be equal.
  2. Contrast: This is about mixing things that are different to make the design more captivating. Such as, you can use big and small shapes, light and dark colors, or rough and smooth textures.
  3. Unity: This means all parts of the design work together, making the design look complete and organized.
  4. Emphasis: This is about making certain parts of the design stand out. you can do this by making them bigger, brighter, or more colorful than the other parts.
  5. Proportion: This is about making sure the different parts of the design are the right size compared to each other.

Differences Between Music And Noise

Music and noise are both sounds, but they are very different. Key differences include:

  1. Organization: Noise is chaotic and unorganized, while music follows a structured arrangement.
  2. Pleasantness: Music is designed to be pleasant and enjoyable, while noise might potentially be unpleasant.
  3. Rhythmic Pattern: Music has a recognizable rhythm, while noise lacks a consistent rhythmic pattern.
  4. Purpose: music is created for artistic expression and enjoyment, while noise is often unwanted and disruptive.
  5. Predictability: Music often has predictable patterns and structures, while noise is often random and unpredictable.

Teaching Methods

To deliver this lesson,‌ ⁤the teacher will⁤ adopt⁤ the following methods: Discussion, Description, Examples, Question and Answer, Listening Activities.

Instructional Procedures

to deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following steps:

Step 1: Introduction (Set Induction)

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: Engage pupils with a discussion about their favourite sounds and songs.Pupils’ Activity: Share their favorite sounds and participate in the discussion.

Step 2: Explanation of Key Concepts

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation, Examples
Teacher’s Activity: explain the principles of design (balance, contrast, unity) with clear examples.
Pupils’ Activity: Listen attentively and ask clarifying questions.

Step 3: Presentation/Guided Practice

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration, Guided Practice
Teacher’s Activity: Show examples of designs illustrating each principle. Guide pupils in identifying these principles in different images.
Pupils’ Activity: Observe the examples and participate in identifying the design principles.

Step 4: Self-Reliant Practice

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Independent Practice
Teacher’s Activity: Provide pupils with images or sounds and ask them to identify the design principles or differentiate between music and noise.
Pupils’ Activity: Independently analyze the provided materials and answer the questions.

Step 5: Note-Taking

time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Note-Taking
Teacher’s Activity: Guide pupils in taking notes on the key concepts discussed.
Pupils’ Activity: write down crucial points and definitions.

Step 6: Evaluation/Review

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning, Review
Teacher’s Activity: Ask review questions to assess understanding.
Pupils’ Activity: Answer the review questions.

Objective-aligned checks:

  1. State two principles of design.
  2. Explain the differences between music and noise.
  3. Identify examples of balance, contrast, and unity in designs.

Step 7: Conclusion

Time: 2 minutes
Teaching Skill: Summarizing
Teacher’s Activity: Summarize the key concepts and assign homework.
Pupils’ Activity: Listen to the summary and note the homework assignment.

Lesson Keywords

  • Balance – A principle of design that ensures visual stability.
  • Contrast – A principle of design that uses differences to create interest.
  • Unity – A principle of design where all parts work together.
  • Music – Organized and pleasant sounds with rhythm.
  • Noise – Unorganized and often unpleasant sounds.

Lesson Evaluation

To evaluate the learning, the teacher asks pupils to:

  1. Name two principles of design.
  2. How can you tell the difference between music and noise?
  3. Give an example of a design that uses contrast.
  4. What makes music different from noise?
  5. Can you think of a sound that could be both music and noise?

Assignment/Homework

  1. Find examples of balance, contrast, and unity in your surroundings.
  2. List three examples of music and three examples of noise you hear in your daily life.
  3. Draw a picture that demonstrates the principle of unity.

Differentiation

  • For slower learners: Provide one-on-one assistance and simplified explanations.
  • For advanced learners: Encourage them to explore more complex designs and sounds, and to create their own examples.
  • For visual/auditory/kinesthetic learners: Use visual aids, audio clips, and hands-on activities to cater to different learning styles.

Note for Teachers

Ensure to provide a variety of examples to illustrate the principles of design and the differences between music and noise.Encourage pupils to actively participate and share their own observations and experiences.
