Lesson Content

Steps in making Temporary Stitches

Temporary stitches are used to hold fabric in place before permanent stitches are applied. this prevents fabric from shifting during sewing. The following are the steps involved in making temporary stitches:

Prepare your needle and thread: Thread your needle with a suitable length of thread and knot the end.
Insert the needle: Push the needle through the fabric from the underside to the top.
Create the first stitch: Pull the thread through and reinsert the needle a short distance away for a short, straight stitch.
Continue stitching: Repeat this,keeping equal distances between each stitch (tacking).
Secure the thread: Knot the thread at the back of the fabric to secure it after stitching.

Making Temporary Stitches

Temporary stitches such as tacking or basting hold fabric pieces for fitting or preparation and are removed after the permanent work is completed. Use even, easily removable stitches, a suitable needle and contrasting thread when appropriate.

Begin and finish without a hard knot when the method requires easy removal. Keep the fabric flat and store the needle and pins safely after use.
