Meal planning is deciding in advance which foods and amounts will be prepared for a person or group. Consider age, health needs, activity, food groups, budget, available ingredients, culture, time, fuel and safe storage.

A balanced plan varies foods across meals and avoids waste by using realistic quantities. Planning does not require expensive imported food; suitable local foods can meet nutritional needs.
