Lesson Content
What is food contamination?
Food contamination occurs when harmful substances or organisms, like bacteria or viruses, enter our food, making it unsafe to eat and potentially causing illness.
Causes of Food Contamination
Food contamination can occur thru various means, introducing harmful substances to our food. The following are some of the common causes:
- Dirty hands: Germs from unwashed hands can easily transfer to food.
- Unwashed fruits and vegetables: These can carry dirt, bacteria, and pesticides.
- Improper storage of food: Incorrect temperature or unclean containers allow bacteria growth.
- Contaminated water: Using unclean water for washing or drinking contaminates food.
- Infected animals and pests: Animals and insects can carry and spread germs.
- Unclean Utensils: Using dirty knives, cutting boards,or pots can transfer germs to food.
- Cross-Contamination: Storing raw meat above ready-to-eat foods in the refrigerator can cause contamination.
Ways of preventing food contamination
Preventing food contamination involves several practices to ensure food safety. These include:
- Washing hands: Always wash hands with soap and water before handling food.
- Washing fruits and vegetables: thoroughly wash produce under running water.
- Keeping cooked and raw foods separate: prevent cross-contamination by keeping them apart.
- Storing foods at the correct temperature: Refrigerate or freeze food at the appropriate temperature.
- Cooking foods thoroughly: Cook meat, poultry, and fish to the correct internal temperature to kill harmful bacteria.
- Using clean utensils: Ensure all utensils and cutting boards are properly washed and sanitized.
- Avoiding cross-contamination: Use separate cutting boards for raw meats and vegetables.
