Lesson Content
Source Of Danger And Insecurity: Food Poisoning
Food poisoning is a common illness caused by eating food contaminated with harmful bacteria or other microorganisms. These microorganisms produce toxins in the food or multiply in our bodies after we eat the contaminated food.
What Is Food Poisoning?
Food poisoning happens when we eat food containing harmful bacteria or other tiny living things. These can make us sick by creating poisons in the food or growing inside us after we eat it.
Effects Of Food Poisoning
Food poisoning can lead to several unpleasant and sometimes serious health issues.Common effects include:
- Stomach ache
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Dehydration
- Nausea
- Headache
Ways Of Preventing Food Poisoning
Preventing food poisoning involves adopting practices that minimize the risk of contamination and ensure food safety.
We can prevent food poisoning by:
- Washing hands thoroughly with soap and water before preparing or eating food.
- Keeping food preparation areas and utensils clean and sanitized.
- Refrigerating perishable foods promptly and storing them at the correct temperature.
- Cooking meat, poultry, and seafood to the recommended internal temperature to kill harmful bacteria. Learn more about cooking temperatures.
- Preventing the spread of bacteria from raw food to cooked food by using separate cutting boards and utensils.
- Discarding food that looks or smells bad.
- Avoiding cross-contamination by keeping raw and cooked foods separate during storage and preparation.
- Ensuring that water used for drinking and food preparation is clean and safe.
