Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge

Pupils have already been taught the classes of food and can recognize common food items eaten daily at home and in school.

Lesson Content/Board Summary

Importance of Food Nutrients

Food nutrients are chemical substances found in food that help the body to grow, repair tissues, produce energy, and stay healthy. Each nutrient has its own special role in the body.

Benefits of Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are energy-giving foods that supply the body with fuel needed for daily activities like walking, running, and studying.

The following are the benefits of carbohydrates:

  1. Provide energy for work and play.
  2. Help maintain body temperature.
  3. Prevent the body from using protein for energy.
  4. Aid proper functioning of the brain and muscles.

Benefits of Proteins

Proteins are body-building foods that help in growth and repair of worn-out tissues. They are found in foods like beans, meat, fish, and eggs.

The following are the benefits of proteins:

  1. Build and repair body tissues.
  2. Help in the formation of enzymes and hormones.
  3. Aid in the production of antibodies that fight diseases.
  4. Promote healthy growth in children.

Benefits of Fats and Oil

Fats and oils are concentrated sources of energy. They help store energy in the body and protect internal organs.

The following are the benefits of fats and oils:

  1. Provide twice as much energy as carbohydrates.
  2. Help maintain body temperature by providing insulation.
  3. Protect internal organs such as the heart and liver.
  4. Aid in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K).

Benefits of Minerals and Salts

Minerals and salts are needed in small quantities but play very important roles in body functions. They are found in foods like milk, salt, fruits, and vegetables.

The following are the benefits of minerals and salts:

  1. Build strong bones and teeth (e.g. calcium and phosphorus).
  2. Help blood formation (e.g. iron).
  3. Regulate water balance in the body (e.g. sodium).
  4. Support nerve and muscle functions.

Benefits of Vitamins

Vitamins are protective foods that help the body fight diseases and maintain proper body functioning.

The following are the benefits of vitamins:

  1. Improve body immunity and prevent diseases.
  2. Help in healthy skin, eyes, and gums.
  3. Aid digestion and proper functioning of body organs.
  4. Repair body tissues and promote healing.

Benefits of Water

Water is the most essential nutrient for life. It makes up a large part of the body and is needed for almost all body processes.

The following are the benefits of water:

  1. Helps in digestion and transportation of nutrients.
  2. Regulates body temperature.
  3. Removes waste and toxins from the body.
  4. Prevents dehydration and keeps the body hydrated.
  5. Acts as a solvent for many body reactions.

Teaching Methods/Instructional Techniques:

Lecture, Discussion, Explanation, Demonstration, Question and Answer, Group Work, Visual Aids

Instructional Procedures

To deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following steps:

Step 1: Introduction

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher displays different food items and asks pupils to name them and say what they do for the body.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils respond by naming foods and discussing what they provide.
Learning Point: Pupils are prepared and motivated for the topic on importance of food nutrients.

Step 2: Benefits of Carbohydrates and Proteins

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher explains the benefits of carbohydrates and proteins with examples of their food sources.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen, observe charts, and identify examples of carbohydrate and protein foods.
Learning Point: Pupils understand the importance of carbohydrates and proteins in the body.

Step 3: Benefits of Fats and Oil, Minerals and Salts

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Discussion
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher discusses how fats, oils, minerals, and salts help the body function properly.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils share examples of fatty foods and minerals in their diets.
Learning Point: Pupils know how fats, oils, and minerals support body health.

Step 4: Benefits of Vitamins and Water

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher uses real food samples to show sources of vitamins and water and explains their importance.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils participate in identifying vitamin-rich foods and discuss the role of water.

Step 6: Evaluation/Review

Time: 3 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning
Teacher’s Activity: The teacher evaluates the learning by asking the following questions:

  1. Mention three benefits of carbohydrates.
  2. State two importance of proteins to the body.
  3. What are two functions of fats and oil?
  4. Mention two minerals and their benefits.
  5. Give two importance of water in the body.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils answer orally and participate in the discussion.
Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate understanding of the lesson objectives.

Step 7: Conclusion

Time: 2 minutes
