Energy
Energy is the power or ability to do work or make things happen. It’s what lets us move, play, and do many things. Energy is needed for everything, from running and jumping to using lights or toys.Things that use energy are all around us!
Examples of Energy in Action
Many activities use energy. The following are examples:
- Running
- Jumping
- Playing games
- Riding a bicycle
- Lifting heavy things
- Turning on lights
- Cooking food
- Swimming
- Climbing stairs

Forms and Sources of Energy
Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. Movement, heat, light, sound and electricity are familiar forms. The Sun supplies light and heat; food supplies energy for the body; fuels can release heat; and batteries provide electrical energy to suitable devices.
Energy can change from one form to another. In a torch, chemical energy in the battery becomes electrical energy and then light. In the body, energy from food supports movement and growth. Pupils should identify both the source and the useful effect in each example.
