Definition of Rock

A rock is a naturally occurring solid mass or aggregate of minerals or mineraloid matter. It forms a significant part of the Earth’s solid outer structure.

Types of Rocks and their Characteristics

Igneous Rocks

Igneous rocks are formed from the cooling and solidification of molten magma or lava.

The following are characteristics of igneous rocks:

  • They are generally hard and crystalline.
  • They do not contain fossils.
  • They can be fine-grained (cooled quickly) or coarse-grained (cooled slowly).
  • They are usually massive and unstratified (not in layers).

Examples of igneous rocks include: granite, basalt, gabbro, obsidian.

Sedimentary Rocks

Sedimentary rocks are formed from the accumulation or deposition of small particles and subsequent cementation of mineral or organic particles on the floor of oceans or other bodies of water at the Earth’s surface.

The following are characteristics of sedimentary rocks:

  • They are often layered or stratified.
  • They frequently contain fossils.
  • They are generally softer than igneous rocks.
  • They are formed from fragments of pre-existing rocks, organic matter, or chemical precipitates.

Examples of sedimentary rocks include: sandstone, limestone, shale, conglomerate.

Metamorphic Rocks

Metamorphic rocks are formed when existing rocks (igneous, sedimentary, or other metamorphic rocks) are changed by heat, pressure, or chemical alteration.

The following are characteristics of metamorphic rocks:

  • They often show banding or foliation (layered appearance).
  • They are generally hard and dense.
  • They may be crystalline.
  • Fossils, if present in the original rock, are usually distorted or destroyed.

Examples of metamorphic rocks include: marble (from limestone), slate (from shale), gneiss (from granite), quartzite (from sandstone).

Handling and Classification of Rock Samples

Handling and classifying rock samples involves careful observation and systematic comparison.

The following are steps for handling and classifying rock samples:

  • Observe the general appearance of the rock (colour, texture, lustre).
