Meaning and Types of Rocks
Rocks are solid parts of the Earth that are made from one or more minerals. They are found on land, in rivers, and in mountains.
Types of Rocks
There are different types of rocks, each formed in a special way.
The following are the types of rocks:
- Igneous rocks form when melted rock cools and becomes hard.Examples include granite, basalt, and obsidian.
- Sedimentary rocks form from pieces of broken rocks and sand pressed together. Examples include sandstone, limestone, and shale.
- Metamorphic rocks form when heat and pressure change old rocks into new rocks. Examples include marble, slate, and gneiss.
Meaning and Main Types of Rocks
A rock is a natural solid material made of one or more minerals. Igneous rocks form when molten material cools; sedimentary rocks form when sediments are deposited, compacted or cemented; metamorphic rocks form when existing rocks are changed by heat and pressure without melting completely.
Granite is commonly igneous, sandstone sedimentary and marble metamorphic. Colour alone cannot identify every rock; texture, grain, hardness and how it formed also matter.
